Captain Ed says: Progressives For Racist Smears? and then nails ... nails ... a disgusting smear on Fred Thompson by a proud but ever so stupid donor to MoveOn.org, John Kerry and others.

It doesn't take long for provocateurs to crawl out of the woodwork to attack candidates, especially in stealth attacks. With Fred Thompson, they've apparently started before he officially enters the race -- and in one case, race is the operative word. Apparently hoping to confuse web surfers looking for Fred's website at www.imwithfred.com, a new site has appeared at www.imwithfred2008.com -- only this site welcomes people to the Ku Klux Klan, "Bringing a Message of Hope and Deliverance to White Christian America!" It includes links to a variety of disgusting racist sites.

Who would post something like this as a smear on Fred Thompson? Someone a little too stupid to cover his tracks, possibly? A DNS search gives us an answer. The domain name, registered through GoDaddy (no great shock there), belongs to:

Henry Reynolds 500 California Ave. #5 Santa Monica, California 90403 United States

The phone number listed on the domain record, which I won't post here, goes to an answering machine for the "law offices of Henry Reynolds". I left a message asking for comment on this website, and then decided to take a look through OpenSecrets and the FEC to see if Mr. Reynolds has a history of supporting Fred Thompson, or even the KKK.

Actually, it turns out that a Mr. Henry Reynolds in the same zip code working as an attorney has a small record of political donations -- but in another direction:

One funny tidbit is that after Henry Reynolds discovered he'd been exposed, he changed the domain registration information to list the owner of the smear site as DomainsbyProxy of Scottsdale, AZ.

"DomainsbyProxy" may sound familiar to my readers. It's the same mask-your-identity domain registrar I caught a few days ago being used by a new smear, er, watch, site here in our fair state.

Update: TerryWatch resents being lumped in with Henry Reynolds, an especially malodorous specimen of online lefty activist, just because they both used "DomainsbyProxy" in order to shield their identity.

TerryWatch, although using that domain registrar to shield his or her identity, is confident at this point that no one will ever regard his or her website as a "smear" website, and certainly not one as smelly as the one Henry Reynolds built.

On the other hand, some people think that just by using the word "Watch" in the title of a blog about a politician that one is, at a minimum, launching a soft smear--since in common usage the people who need to be watched are the people one believes are likely to be guilty of various ugly behaviors.

That's the headline of a disturbing column by Deroy Murdock:

NEW YORK -- The Tennessee Center for Policy Research recently generated headlines when it announced that former Vice President Al Gore's Nashville estate "devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours" of electricity in 2006, "more than 20 times the national average."

This free-market think tank's phones lit up when it analyzed Nashville Electric Service's public records and identified an inconvenient gap between Gore's conservationism and his energy consumption. The research center's one-page press release was greeted with enough megawatts of hatred to power the South.

"I was accused several times of being a 'stupid, redneck bitch,'" recalls Nicole Williams, who fielded numerous calls. "I repeatedly was called a 'whore' and asked 'Whose whore are you?' for three days straight, almost as if those were talking points ... I was shocked by these sexist insults _ basically attacking my gender."

It gets much, much worse.
